Why Marriage?

Because to the depths of me, I long to love one person,
With all my heart, my soul, my mind, my body...

Because I need a forever friend to trust with the intimacies of me,
Who won't hold them against me,
Who loves me when I'm unlikable,
Who sees the small child in me, and
Who looks for the divine potential of me...

Because I need to cuddle in the warmth of the night
With someone who thanks God for me,
With someone I feel blessed to hold...

Because marriage means opportunity
To grow in love in friendship...

Because marriage is a discipline
To be added to a list of achievements...

Because marriages do not fail, people fail
When they enter into marriage
Expecting another to make them whole...

Because, knowing this,
I promise myself to take full responsibility
For my spiritual, mental and physical wholeness
I create me, I take half of the responsibility for my marriage
Together we create our marriage...

Because of this understanding
The possibilities are limitless.

  • I am the author of this Why Marriage poem

To set the record straight, I am the author of this poem "Why Marriage?" This Mari Nichols-Haining woman has plagiarized my poem all over the Internet. I absolutely can't believe the nerve of her. I wrote this poem over 25 years ago and marketed it in the 80's. I had my company name on the poster, which must be why this woman just thought she could put her name to it. When I found this out recently, I had my lawyer write her a cease and desist letter (dated August 29, 2011). I have the copyright documents to prove that I am the author of this poem. My lawyer has told this woman if she doesn't clean up these lies immediately, we will take legal action.

  • People Fail

This is a very beautiful poem.

I struggle that it says marriages don't fail, people do. People never fail, they find out more, they learn who they are through experience. They make decisions based on who they are at a given point in time.

Most people don't know who they are until they meet their partner - the person they've chosen to be their mirror. The person who will show all their weak spots and strengths. It just doesn't follow that that person is going to be their lifelong partner in marriage.

For those who have had a faltering marriage or relationship, their time is well spent looking at themselves before all else. It might be that something can be done to remedy and improve their current situation, or it might be that it has now served its purpose.

Marriages and relationships are gold dust to each and everyone of us, only as long as we're willing to learn and to listen. Not all are meant to be saved or to work, but each individual is.

  • just wonderful

This poem is just wonderful. It truly speaks of what love and marriage is about. Never go into a marriage trying to find you, know yourself first and expand yourself through your partner. Many marriages do fail because one partner is living for the other person and has no true self.
